MADDISON’S JUNE

This June has been an unbelievably stressful and rewarding month of my life. Finishing my dissertation required a large amount of resilience and determination. My hard work and dedication enabled me to finish a piece of work that I am immensely proud of. Since, I have taken some time to fully relax which I have never had the opportunity to do before. My fitness levels have increased and as restrictions of lockdown have reduced I’ve taken the time to spend some quality time with close friends and family. With my 21st birthday approaching in July I am taking this unprecedented time to reflect on what I have achieved and plan what I want my future to look like. I hope you’re all happy and doing well!

GRADUATING UNIVERSITY!

After 3 rewarding years reading BA Hons Fashion Marketing & Management at University of Southampton, Winchester School of Art I handed in my Final Major Project/Dissertation titled Gucci Travel Club in June. Throughout my time at university not only have I been enthralled by a subject that I absolutely adore, but I also learnt the most valuable life lessons and formed friendships that will last a lifetime. My Mumma has always said that university is not only about learning your craft it’s mainly incredibly grounding for a person, I couldn’t agree more. I lived in university halls for the first year, then private halls for the second and third years which I nicknamed my ‘New York Apartment’. I feel incredibly overwhelmed that my university experience was cut short due to Coronavirus however, it gave me the opportunity to work undistracted on my final project.

I was incredibly fortunate to go on 3 trips of a lifetime while at university. In first year, I visited Berlin, second year I travelled to Florence and in third year I visited my bucket list destination; New York. Each trip I learnt numerous clandestine facts about the fashion industry. When visiting Florence, the group visited a perfumery named Sileno Cheloni where the informed experts offer a personalised scent experience made from all-natural ingredients. Sileno Cheloni creates the signature scent that Gucci uses within their stores; I find sensory marketing exceptionally fascinating.

Now that I have finished university and I have a small break before finding my dream fashion job I will take the time to post about my university projects on this blog. I may even make a few YouTube videos explaining the innovations. Expect a lot of posting coming your way!

Imagine you meet a man, spend seven glorious days together, and fall in love. And it’s mutual: you’ve never been so certain of anything.

So when he leaves for a long-booked holiday and promises to call from the airport, you have no cause to doubt him.

But he doesn’t call.

Your friends tell you to forget him, but you know they’re wrong: something must have happened; there must be a reason for his silence.

What do you do when you finally discover you’re right? That there is a reason – and that reason is the one thing you didn’t share with each other?

The truth.

I FELL IN LOVE & HIS NAME IS NEW YORK! – PART 3

THE OUTFIT

Dear New York…I’ll never get over you! Dressing in New York is the ultimate fashionista heaven. You have the freedom to display your most outlandish clothing and no-one bats an eyelid! On the final day I wore gold faux-leather trousers, a black sweatshirt with organza bow, a black Coach belt, black military boots, a black croc bag and the distinguished brown fur coat. A metallic piece of clothing paired with block colour makes the trousers stand out whilst blending in enough to be worn for daytime. In New York it’s ideal to make your outfit work for day and night, this outfit fits both.

THE EXPERIENCE

DAY THREE

Time in New York flies! Two Days down with one full day and one-half day left. My heart was already aching at the thought of leaving! I started the third day at the most wonderful breakfast joint, The Smith. I had my all-time favourite, Eggs Benedict, while my NYC homie, Lucie had the biggest stack of American Pancakes!!! We accompanied our breakfast with a pot of tea, how British hahaha! The waiters were incredibly polite and accommodating and even commented on their adoration for the British accent – how cute. We ventured to the bathroom after eating where we found a photobooth and classic shoe-shining chair. Lucie and I got the funniest Photobooth photographs, needless to say we weren’t ready!

After a breakfast full of laughter, we started towards Central Park. En route, we spotted a Barbra Streisand poster flapping in the wind. We found the entrance to the exhibition named ‘Hello Gorgeous!’. The display inside the Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center showed the journey down her musical memory lane with recordings of Streisand classics. Stunning images of the striking star were plastered wall to wall, while her songs played through speakers. Her fashion was iconic.

After immersing ourselves in the exhibition we ventured to Central Park. Littered with unbelievable views of central NYC, the central city park was breath taking. The weather was stunning with blue skies and sunshine. Although I would’ve loved to see the trees in the Summer full of leaves, the stark branches were beautiful. We found the perfect viewing area to get a picture with the city skyline in the background.

Next, we walked Fifth Avenue exploring the Flagship stores of countless designers; Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Coach and Chanel, all with stunning interior design. The Burberry store had an innovative interior design; each floor had a different colourway; one floor pink, one blue, one green. Such a simple yet effective visual. I was lucky enough to visit the week-old Tiffany store with four breath-taking floors. They had a postcard delivery service free from in-store. I sent a Tiffany postcard to my parents, much classier than an average postcard! While walking past the Madison Avenue sign of course I had to get a picture – what a shame they spelt Maddison wrong!

In the evening we walked up to Times Square to enjoy the bright lights at night-time. Times Square is buzzing to say the least! It’s certainly the most tourist-like hub in New York. The streets are full of dessert shops; garish pink cakes, giant caramel brownies and enormous cheesecake slices line the shelves. We dined at the legendary Hard Rock Café, full of life and music; you can’t get more American than that.

DAY FOUR

I felt so disheartened to only have a morning left in the best city I have ever visited. A central hub for fashion. I started the day at Blank Slate Coffee & Kitchen where I enjoyed a blondie with M&M’s, such a treat. The last place I visited was Greenwich Village neighbourhood of Lower Manhattan. I wandered through Washington Square Park. My favourite thing to do whilst travelling is finding the cutest spots by eye. Of course, being well-prepared for a trip and knowing the main places to visit is amazing but walking down side-streets and alleyways can reveal the most beautiful shops and cafes. I came across Posh Pop, a bakery stuffed full of cakes and enormous cookies; I opted for a red velvet cookie, which was beyond yummy! As it was my final day in NYC I decided it was time for a notorious NYC bagel! Not being able to find a bagel shop I asked a local for their recommendation, to which they replied…Bagel Bob’s. I opted for a poppy seed bagel with salami and cream-cheese, it was the best! After riding the subway for the last time, munching on the delicious bagel I felt gutted to be leaving. I will 100% visit again, I am also certain that I will have part of my career in the phenomenal city. New York is always a good idea!

I FELL IN LOVE…HIS NAME IS NEW YORK! – PART 1

As a fashion student and aspiring blogger, it’s hard to believe that I had never visited the Big Apple before. Oh, how I have been missing out! I had visited America previously and adored the country. Visiting New York confirmed that I will definitely be exploring working there in my fashion career. New York is fashion obsessed, I’ve never been to a city where everyone is dressed sharply, especially on Fifth Avenue – Billionaire’s Row. Arriving in New York, the buildings, the people, the excitement is so very overwhelming – in the best way. I stayed in Pod 51 a hostel that exceeded my expectations, amidst the buzzing streets of New York, a short walk away from the iconic New York locations. Just walking through the streets in New York is like nowhere else I’ve been, the colossal buildings, quirky street signs and bustling people are persistently animated.

Day 1

The Outfit

In New York you have free reign to over-dress. I adore jumpsuits, they’re so simple, yet so striking. I wore this ASOS cream, denim jumpsuit with tie waist. The loose leg, combined with the belted waist is so figure flattering, while being comfy and warm for the New York avenues. Comfortable shoes are a MUST when visiting New York, you spend the entire day on foot. I averaged 20,000 steps daily. I was gifted the Converse boots at Christmas. They’re so unique, I was receiving compliments about them left-right-and-centre, one person even asked if they were Gucci boots! The exterior of the boot is striking; made from Gor-Tex material the boots have the word ‘Gor-Tex’ littered across the boot; they’re so perfect for city breaks as they’re waterproof too. They are beyond cosy with the fleece lining and a thick sole. Of course, I strutted the New York streets in my brown, faux-fur coat, highly-fashionable while confronting the cold weather. I used a cross-body Zara black bag the entire time; essential for city breaks.

The Experience

Walking down Fifth Avenue – Easy Street – was breath-taking, now that’s where I want to live! The buildings, the people, the designer shops; all beyond perfection. The first full day initiated with a visit to Gladson New York, located on Fifth Avenue; a fabric supplier for multiple luxury suiting brands. The intricacy of the process of developing each fabric swatch is shown in stunningly detailed samples. From pinstripe to check, navy to burgundy the fabrics styles created are vast. Learning about the importance of implementing these fabrics into female suiting also, felt empowering. Then, I ventured to the ferry where I saw amazing views of Manhattan Island and Brooklyn Bridge, even spotting the Statue of Liberty in the distance. New York is oh so picturesque, every view is scenic.

Getting off the ferry I arrived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This setting was very dissimilar to the bustling Fifth Avenue vibe. It was like a ghost-town. It had an eerie, distinctive impression, adding a feeling of culture to the trip. Graffiti wall-to-wall and Indie food joints littered the location. I dined with friends in a pub-style restaurant, eating a legendary grilled cheese sandwich – to-die-for. Strolling along the streets thrift shops invited me in; vintage Gucci and Louis Vuitton the prized possession of the second-hand shops. Searching through rails and rails of pre-owned clothing highlights how resale is booming in the contemporary fashion market. I yearned to know everything about the previous owner, clothing signifying untold stories. Williamsburg was a treasure trove, full of desirability. I spotted a stunningly decorated restaurant; all white with plantation and neon lights. It was called The Butcher’s Daughter. I ordered a latte. Asking whether they had any syrups the waitress said no, but recommended the mocha; the said mocha had magic mushroom powder in it… I then spied hemp milk and many other controversial additives. I opted for the plain latte hahaha! Williamsburg mirrors the hipster areas of London; like Shoreditch and Camden.

GO BROOKLYN NETS! I’ve always been a fan of basketball; being part of my high school team I appreciate the sport ;), as well as my fascination with the incredible height of the players. You can’t get more American than a basketball game. I went to see Brooklyn Nets play UItar Jazz. Spending $10 on a foam finger and almost $20 on nachos with cheese and a lemonade the size of my head was SO WORTH IT! The cheerleaders and street-dancers generated a VIBEEE, it was such an exhilarating experience. To anyone who visits New York I highly recommend seeing a game. Getting the subway back to the hotel was a struggle, but I made it! After a full-on day, collective with the jet lag I slept like a baby.

SUCKER FOR STRIPES

I am such a sucker for pjs, especially striped ones! As soon as I spy a super cute set of nightwear I’m drawn to it. Gilly Hicks used to be one of my favourite stores, but since they downsized I hadn’t seen anything from the brand for a while. Recently my love for GH was reignited as I was browsing in Holister in London. A blue and white stripe will ALWAYS be a classic, you can never go wrong with it. One of my favourite prints, combined with the SUPER flattering cut of GH nightwear I couldn’t resist. The ribbon tie, white edging and Gilly Hicks logo are the perfect details, making an irresistible set. I opted for a sassy short style and the matching top which I tied to create a crop. Cute or what?!

RED FRILL SHORTS

Frill shorts are a must have for your Summer wardrobe this year; this ASOS red pair is just perfect. The frill short style is particularly flattering and can spice up a white crochet top. Crochet is huge this year in fashion, Pretty Little Thing have killed it with this white cropped crochet top with tiered frill statement sleeves; the ultimate vacation piece. The striking block red of the shorts adds a pop of bold colour, complimentary against a summer glow. Wear with a red lip and tan accessories to create an impeccable look. Here I’m wearing ‘Lady Balls’ by Too Faced; the finest red matte lip cream and Valentino inspired sandals with gold studs; a killer yet comfy shoe. Finally, paired with my classic Zara frilly bucket bag and white ASOS tassel earrings the outfit is complete. The look is an essential to achieve the hot ‘vacay’ aesthetic.
